November 2009: ValueNotes made a presentation – The deep web unfolded: Effective use of the invisible web for CI – at a SCIP conference in Chicago. The session highlighted:

• The challenges faced while searching for information on the web

• The difference between ‘visible web’ and ‘deep web’

• Finding deep web resources

• Using relevant keywords to find databases

• Using directory listings to help locate thematic websites

• Using Federated Search Engines

The presentation discussed how using the right sources and traditional searches can be complemented with deep web tools. It also lists various meta-search engines and alternatives to Google and provides pointers on building custom search engines, using federated search engines, and ways to specifically search for people on the internet.
